I live in what would be considered the suburbs of Paris. It’s the Brooklyn or Queens to New York kind of situation. Sometimes you have to pull teeth to get people to come out to the good old 93 department. (Departments are best described as counties like in the US.) Technically it’s not that far from the center of Paris we live just on the outskirts of Paris limits. But since I’ve become a bit of a cook it’s starting to become easier and doing it on the weekend is essential. It wasn’t hard to tempt friends into coming over for a full on Thanksgiving feast. I’m quite a bad blogger so I missed the photo of all the food on the table. We were all starving so we just dug in. But I did get the table before and the pies.
Shopping for ingredients in France for very American recipes is hard at times. For example they don’t sell normal pumpkins in the stores not the breed we are most used to in the states. The closest one is something called a ‘Potimarron’ they are much smaller in size and have a very funny stem on top and the skin looks a bit like someone with pot marks on their face. But when roasted it has the silkiest filling perfect for a cheesecake and pie.
Surprisingly, pecans are kind of hard to find in packages with more than 200-250 grams. One package can easily cost 3 euros as well. I tend to switch to almonds or walnuts in most recipes. Also turkeys are quite hard to find at a normal grocery store. You can go to the butcher but make sure you put in order in advance they don’t always carry them week to week. I tend to switch to a roast chicken because you can always find a whole chicken.
For sides I made corn casserole, celery, onion & herb stuffing, mushroom green bean casserole with french fried onions on top, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with sweet sauce and marshmallows. As you can see from the photos for dessert I made a pumpkin cheesecake and a pumpkin pie. Everything was made from scratch except the mushroom sauce on the green beans I used one of the dried packs of mushroom soup here and added milk to it. Each item has been linked to the recipe I used in case you wanted to try it they are pretty easy to do.
After all was said and done we hardly have any left overs six girls and one guy packed away almost everything I made. It’s almost made me sad I was looking forward to at least 2 days of left overs. But after having these dishes again after quite a while without I think I’ll put some of those side dishes in circulation with things I tend to make every few weeks. And so that was my Thanksgiving feast for all you wondering what an American did for the holiday.
